FYR Cycene Ond Drinc (FYR), a modern European-style restaurant with a touch of rugged charm introduces a menu of brunch bites and unique offerings.
BRUNCH, this midday meal is a beloved weekly ritual where one can spend lazy afternoons indulging in breakfast classics such as eggs benedicts, waffles and pancakes.
If you are bored of the usual brunch fare, here are some unusual brunch offerings newly introduced by FYR Cycene Ond Drinc (FYR). The brunch features a European-style menu and an incredible beverage lineup of gourmet coffee & tea, grilled fresh fruit juice, beers, cocktails and wine.
FYR Brunch menu is only available on weekends every Saturday & Sunday from 9am till 3.30pm.
SMALL BITES
Crispy oven baked Sweet Potato fries and Yam fries ($8.00) served with cheese sauce and tomato salsa make a healthier alternative to the regular potato fries. The sweet potatoes and yam were cut into long matchsticks, tossed in spices and baked on high heat in the Josper Wood Charcoal Oven until crispy and lightly browned.
I love the crisp satisfaction of the sweet potato fries and yam fries without the fats; it was light and crispy with no traces of oil. These small bites will make great accompaniment with an iced cold pint of beer on a warm weekend afternoon.
The Grilled Squid ($12) paired with crispy onions on the side is a simple, yet satisfying dish, perfect when eaten with a plate of steamed rice.
Obviously, rice is not served at FYR, but mains such as seafood linguine, baked beef hash would go well with this dish. The squid was lightly charred on the outside, and grilled to tender perfection. A bright marinade made with turmeric, garlic and lime leaves added bold flavours to the seafood bites.
I love traditional French snails straight out of the oven in a heavy garlic butter sauce, but FYR did it with a twist offering Roasted Escargot ($12.00) in a little skillet pot finished with turmeric, lemongrass and other spices, served with toasted bread on the side.
The escargots were tender and not overcooked, I enjoyed the tangy sautéed gravy in a pleasant way by dipping bread into it, noms.
MAINS
My favourite main dish at FYR would be the Baked Beef Hash ($18.00) made with diced corned beef, onions, chopped parsley, tomatoes in savoury gravy; possibly Worcestershire sauce, topped with an raw egg and served with spring onion crepes.
Hash is one of the most comforting and fuss-free dish to have at any time of the day. The baked beef hash here is hearty in portion and can share 1-2 person.
Another dish served in a skillet pan is the Baked Java Curry Chicken Ragout ($15.00) with kidney beans, sweet corn, coriander, topped with an egg and served with spring onion crepes.
The chicken casserole dish was not to my liking, and I couldn't really find traces of chicken in the stew. Perhaps it was diced too finely and the beans were way too generous. The spring onion crepes were light and pillowy, good enough to be eaten on its own or dipped into the stew or hash.
If you are looking for a protein-filled diet, the Grilled Steak & Eggs ($28.00) is the only way to go. Nothing too fancy in FYR's steak and egg rendition, the striploin is oven-cooked till medium rare and accompanied with a perfect sunny side up and toasted breads.
The interior of the steak was slightly pink after I sliced it, had a mild smoky flavour and takes no time to finish everything if you are a beef lover.
The next dish can be a little tricky if the salmon is not fresh, or if the baked blinis is not made properly. Blinis is a savoury version of pancakes made with yeasted butter and baked in the oven.
The Baked Bilinis ($15) is topped with an sunny side up and Avruga caviar and grated Bottarga, which is a Mediterranean delicacy of cured fish roe from tuna, or swordfish. The grilled salmon on the side was served as a main, but somehow I found that this dish combination was rather separated.
Eating the salmon alone can be quite boring, while eating the baked bilnis with the egg might not go well either. This would probably be the last dish that I'll order on the brunch menu.
DESSERTS
For desserts, try FYR's signature Baked Pistachio Melt & Pandan Ice Cream ($10) and complete your meal with a cup of gourmet coffee or tea, or have fun at the special Party Detox Basket ($10) which allows you to concoct your own Bloody Mary cocktail from the array of ingredients such as grilled fresh tomato juice, worcestershire sauce, tabasco sauce, rock salt and the base spirit - vodka.
Or on a safer side, opt for the signature brunch cocktail - My Hot Vino Tinto ($10), a refreshing red wine-based cocktail infused with orange, apple and cinnamon.
FYR Brunch menu is only available on weekends every Saturday & Sunday from 9am till 3.30pm.
